Saturday May 6 2006

A dazzling display of folk and tribal music and various dance forms depicting the colourful moods and myriad landscape of India held the 2,500 Asian Development Bank (ADB) delegates in sway for half-an-hour here on Friday.

Organised by the Union Tourism Ministry, the cultural programme — Raas Rang— was so impressive that the participants competed with journalists to capture the event in stills and videocams.

Over 100 artistes from 18 States took part in the programme.

Besides our own famed Dhimsa dance from Araku Valley in Visakhapatnam district performed by newly-weds, the extremely sophisticated Kathakali of Kerala which has a highly evolved mime and gesture language, Purulia Chhau, a vibrant and colourful dance of West Bengal depicting the mythological events of Ramayana and Mahabharata, the popular Bhangra from Punjab and colourful swirling skirts and graceful movements by young women and girls performing Ghumer dance of Haryana cast a spell on the audience.

The other dances that formed part of the programme included, Mohiniattam (Kerala), Bihu (Assam), Gidda (Punjab), Dholu Kunitha (Karnataka), Pung Cholum (Manipur), Baul (West Bengal), Desert Symphony and Kalbelia (Rajasthan), Dummy Horse Karagam (Tamil Nadu), Raas and Siddi Dhamal (Gujarat).

The delegates were also amazed by an exhibition of Kalaripayattu (a form of martial arts from Kerala) by two sword wielding youth displaying their prowess to fight the enemies.
